Exploring the Mysteries of the Universe through Cutting-Edge Physics, Astronomy, and Mathematics
The Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU)
The Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU) is an international research institute established to answer fundamental questions about the universe. It brings together the world’s foremost researchers to explore the origins of matter and the universe.

A Message from the Director
What is the universe made of? How did it begin, and what is its fate? What are the laws that govern the universe? And why do we exist in this universe? These are questions that are shared by all humankind. And this is precisely why the Kavli IPMU aspires to be an international and interdisciplinary research institute.
Answering these questions requires a world-class research institute, and already more than half of the researchers at the Kavli IPMU are outstanding scholars from overseas. With generous support from the Japanese government, the Kavli IPMU – despite being built almost from scratch – is growing day by day into a world-class research institute, now counting about eighty researchers as members. Many novel research papers have been produced in collaboration with prominent overseas researchers.
However, even subsidies from the Japanese government, which have been regarded as extremely stable from an international perspective, have now fallen under the sway of the recent political situation and economic climate. As competition for personnel – the key to research – intensifies worldwide, it is vitally necessary to secure stable and flexible financial resources so that we will continue to be able to attract researchers as a world-class research institution.
