Rebuilding the Computer Science Education and Research Hub for the Future

Message from the Project Leader

The Department of Information Science at the School of Science and the Department of Computer Science at the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, The University of Tokyo, will celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2025. Over the past five decades, we have been at the forefront of Japan's computer science field, producing world-class research and nurturing outstanding talent to shape the future of technology.

As we approach this milestone, we also reflect on the history of Building 7, Faculty of Science—a place that has fostered countless innovations and collaborations. This building has been the heart of groundbreaking research and a cradle for many who have shaped the modern landscape of computer science. However, like the field itself, our facilities must evolve to meet the demands of the future.
To mark this occasion and ensure we continue to lead the way, we have established the "Computer Science Education Support Fund." This fund is not simply about renovating an aging building; it is about creating a future-ready environment—a hub where students, researchers, and innovators can collaborate, thrive, and drive global advancements in technology.

Your support is vital to realizing this vision. Together, we can honor the legacy of the past while building a future that inspires excellence and innovation. We deeply appreciate your generosity and commitment to this transformative journey.

Why is Facility Renovation Important?

Since 1975, the Department of Information Science (now the Department of Computer Science) has been a driving force in Japan’s computer science field, achieving globally recognized research breakthroughs. As computer science—including AI technology—becomes even more central to modern society, its role in shaping the future continues to grow.

Breakthroughs in machine learning have transformed fields like image recognition, speech processing, and natural language understanding. These advancements also influence other areas such as engineering, medicine, and natural sciences, bringing profound changes to society at large.

However, Building 7, Faculty of Science, built in 1986, can no longer support the demands of today’s cutting-edge research and collaboration. To meet these needs, we aim to transform it into a next-generation education and research hub.

The revitalized building will feature:

  • Open labs for flexible and collaborative research.
  • Learning commons to foster student innovation and interaction.
  • Lecture rooms designed to welcome both academia and the local community.

How Your Donations Will Be Used

Your contributions will directly support the transformation of Building 7, Faculty of Science, into a state-of-the-art education and research hub.

Donations will be utilized for the following key initiatives:

  • Creation of Open-Floor Research Spaces
Designed to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration and foster interaction among researchers.
  • Establishment of Learning Commons
A space on the first floor dedicated to supporting independent learning, group discussions, and student innovation.
  • Development of Community-Oriented Lecture Rooms
Flexible spaces ideal for hosting science cafés, science schools, and other events that connect science with the community.
  • Accessibility and Diversity-Conscious Design
Ensuring an inclusive environment that accommodates diverse needs and promotes accessibility for all.

The Impact of Your Support

Your generosity will enable students to learn and explore cutting-edge technologies, including AI, in a more advanced environment. It will also foster cross-disciplinary research and strengthen connections with local communities and industries. Together, we can advance society and reinforce Japan's global leadership in technology and innovation.
