About the Graduate School and Faculty of Economics

Message from the Dean

The Faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019. Over the past century, our faculty has produced world-leading research through the efforts of outstanding professors and has nurtured many talented individuals who have contributed to the development of Japan and the world. Continuing this tradition, today we maintain a diverse faculty engaged in cutting-edge education and research, while exceptional students devote themselves to their studies with great ambition.

The Faculty and Graduate School of Economics offer world-class education and research across a wide range of disciplines. The undergraduate program consists of three departments: Economics, Management, and Finance. The Graduate School is divided into two divisions: Economics and Management. The Economics division includes departments of Economics, Statistics, Area Studies, and Economic History. The Management division consists of departments of Management and Quantitative Finance. In every field, we provide high-quality education backed by advanced research.

We also place great importance on maintaining strong ties with society. In addition to the social engagement of individual faculty members, seven affiliated centers work to return research results to society.

  • CIRJE (Center for International Research on the Japanese Economy) promotes international collaborative research, focusing primarily on Japanese economic analysis.
  • CARF (Center for Advanced Research in Finance) plays a central role in financial research in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • MERC (Management Education and Research Center) connects our management research with the business world.
  • CREPE (Center for Research and Education in Program Evaluation) advances EBPM—Evidence-Based Policy Making—through research and education.
  • CGAS (Center for Global Advanced Studies) develops and disseminates methods to train researchers capable of internationally communicating high-level research results.
  • CREI (Center for Real Estate Innovation) is an interdisciplinary organization for real estate research across various institutions within UTokyo.
  • UTMD (UTokyo Market Design Center) studies and implements ‘rules of the game’ to achieve socially desirable outcomes.

Through these centers, we share our research achievements with society while learning from social needs to inspire new research.

The Faculty and Graduate School of Economics will continue to contribute to society through education and research, nurture globally active leaders, and pioneer the frontiers of economic research, implementing its results for the benefit of society. Much of this work is made possible through your generous support. We sincerely thank you for your past contributions and kindly ask for your continued assistance.

Request for Suppor

As government funding continues to decline, diversifying our financial resources has become an urgent priority to further advance our educational and research activities. While we have had funds dedicated to specific purposes, this fund aims to integrate these goals and support the overall development of the Faculty and Graduate School of Economics toward world-class education and research.

By utilizing this fund, we will enhance facilities and equipment, improve the learning environment, and create spaces where students can focus on their studies comfortably. We will also promote internationalization through study-abroad programs and by inviting outstanding researchers from overseas, thereby fostering globally active talent and contributing to social progress through practical application of research results.

Goals Achieved Through Your Contribution

  • Improvement of Learning Environment: Upgrading our facilities, mainly on seminar rooms, lecture halls and library, and enhancing our student support programs .
  • Student Academic Support: Providing scholarships and financial assistance for overseas study.
  • Advancement of Education and Research: Inviting leading researchers from Japan and abroad, hosting workshops, and disseminating research findings to society.

Expected Outcomes

Enhanced educational activities will create a safe and comfortable environment for students, improving learning efficiency and enriching student life. This will lead to the development of individuals who will excel in various fields of society. Expanded research activities will foster knowledge exchange with top researchers worldwide, generate outstanding research results, and strengthen UTokyo’s global presence. Collaboration with governments and businesses will also increase, promoting social implementation of research outcomes.
