I am truly honored to receive the UTokyo Foundation for Supporting International Students Scholarship, and I extend my sincere gratitude to the University of Tokyo for its unwavering support in my academic and research endeavors.

My doctoral research project is dedicated to the development of flexible electronic devices for the treatment of heart diseases. In our increasingly aging society, cardiac ailments have emerged as an urgent and critical concern. According to statistics, heart disease ranks as the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for approximately 31% of annual fatalities. However, current electronic devices used for heart disease treatment are made from rigid materials like metals, posing potential harm to human tissues. Furthermore, these electronic devices struggle to meet the demanding requirements of high adhesiveness, resolution, and conductivity essential for effective cardiac treatment. Consequently, my doctoral research focuses on addressing these challenges, aiming to provide more advanced solutions for the treatment of heart diseases.
The support from the UTokyo Foundation for Supporting International Students Scholarship has allowed me to fully immerse myself in my research without the burden of financial concerns, significantly enhancing both the efficiency and quality of my research outcomes. I deeply appreciate the University of Tokyo for its support. In my future doctoral studies, I will give my best efforts to contribute to societal well-being through my research, aiming to improve the overall quality of life for people.

I am very grateful for the support provided by Shienkikin scholarship. This opportunity has reduced my financial stress and allowed me to fully focus my research topic.

Currently I am focusing on the boarding process of blended wing body passenger aircraft. While blended wing body is considered as one of the most popular options for next-generation passenger aircraft, the impact of boarding strategies and passenger space expansion remains relatively unexplored. I am studying this topic through boarding simulation models and multidisciplinary design optimization tools. When combined with an appropriate boarding strategy, a moderate increase in the aisle width can enhance the boarding process to a comparable level, thereby shortening the turnaround process and improve the overall efficiency of airline operations.

I am determined to make further contributions to improve the passengers experience during future air travel. While it will probably be another 20 years before we can see blended wing body aircraft flying in the sky, I am sure that air travel will become significantly more efficient, more environmentally friendly, and more comfortable for future travelers.

Thank you, UTokyo!

I want to express my sincere appreciation to the university for awarding me the UTokyo Foundation Scholarship. It is a great honor for me to receive this scholarship. It not only supports my studies and life, but also opens up opportunities for me to explore a broader world.

In my one year at the University of Tokyo, I've experienced lots of growth as a graduate student. Compared to myself a year ago, I now possess a much deeper understanding of academic research. I've gained more insights into what makes a good research topic, how to advance projects, and how to present scientific work logically and friendly. These general insights as invaluable assets, benefiting not only my research but also influencing the way I perceive the world. And it is the experiences of this one year at UTokyo have ignited my interest toward academic and have solidified my determination to pursue a doctoral degree following the completion of my master's studies.

Once again, I want to extend my genuine gratitude to UTokyo and the UTokyo Foundation Scholarship for its generous support, enabling me to pursue my studies and sustain my life during this academic journey.

I would like to express my sincere thanks for being supported by UTF.

With interest in the most fundamental part of physics, I devoted myself in studying particle physics, inspecting the properties and interactions of fundamental particles with the highest precision, using the most advanced accelerators and detectors. These particles are the most microscopic component of the world known by human being so far, while they are the most basic cause for the most macroscopic properties of our universe. CP violation in fundamental particles gives the hint of explaining the asymmetry between matters and anti-matters; Potential invisible particles are the candidates for widely existing Dark Matters; Understanding to Quantum Chromodynamics may explain the evolution of the universe after the Big Bang.

To study experimental particle physics, I came to Japan and entered University of Tokyo as a master student. By participating in the Belle II experiment which is hosted in Tsukuba, Japan, I am able to get my hand on the most advanced particle detectors and the lepton accelerators with the highest luminosity. The wonderful research environment makes me confident about making contribution to the academic field, to our understanding about the universe, and to all human beings.

I am truly grateful for the support of The University of Tokyo fellowship. This opportunity will allow me to fully focus on my academic journey.
My research interests lie in the field of media and cultural studies, specifically exploring the representation of minority groups and youth culture. While progress has been made in recognizing the rights of women and other marginalized groups, there are still many issues of injustice and inequality that persist in this neoliberal era. I hope to explore the counter-creativity and resistance that coexist with these problems in youth culture and the subculture while addressing these issues in my research.
I am determined to contribute to the international community, demonstrate caring attitude, and do my best for the advancement of women, minority rights, and international communication. I believe that the kindness and support that have been shown to me through this fellowship must be reciprocated by my active involvement in society. I hope my research will continue to pass on this support and contribute to the next generation, benefiting society as a whole.

My journey in Japan started at and with the University of Tokyo. Since I came, I have been pushed to my limits, U Tokyo has made me a better academic, and professional. However, this is not the biggest takeaway from my experience. I have never felt so welcome and supported by an institution as I have from this University. They thrive in looking out for their students and creating a comfortable environment for everyone. My faculty, the office for international students, the health center, and all the facilities in the university have made me feel that I am not alone in this journey and that there are people I can lean on. And this is not even the best part, in this University I have met the most wonderful people ever, professors who have supported me in my career goals, advising me to be and do better, and new friends that have become my family in Japan. The University of Tokyo is for sure a prestigious university, but in my opinion, the real value it has to offer and what makes this university strong and amazing is the people that work and study here.

I would like to first express my deep gratitude to the University of Tokyo Foundation for financially supporting my Utokyo academic journey, which has been no short of challenges, yet continues to be inspiring and fulfilling as I venture forth.

Since I have an academic background in computer science and a strong personal interest in international relations and politics, I decided to explore my post-graduate research opportunities with an interdisciplinary focus on computational social science. My current research interest lies in the unraveling of Japan’s national narratives to re-frame and reassess foreign threats to justify its national security policies over the past decades. I hope to apply unsupervised machine learning algorithms to analyze official documents by the Japanese government to discover shifts in security narratives that are hard for human readers to discern.

I have had extensive experience living overseas in many countries (Canada, US, UAE etc.) outside of my home country China for more than 10 years. However, my life in Japan and at Utokyo has enriched my views on the world with a unique Japanese perspective.

With my global perspective, I hope to further strengthen the communication and mutual understandings between Japan, my home country China, and the world.

I am very lucky to have the opportunity to study at the University of Tokyo, and I am very grateful for the support of the Shienkikin scholarship for my study and life, especially when I am facing the dual pressure of scientific research and child care.

My research is about the energy recovery and reuse of waste algae after antibiotic pollution treatment,in where the conversion of toxic substances in it cannot be ignored. At present, human beings are facing major problems in the sustainable development of human beings, such as environmental pollution and energy shortage. I hope that through my research, energy can be recovered while pollutants are treated. And I can make a little contribution to solving the crisis of human existence.

Thanks again to the Shienkikin scholarship for supporting me to study at the University of Tokyo. This time will be the most precious memory in my life.

First of all, please allow me to express my sincere gratitude to the University of Tokyo Scholarship Fund and the contributors. Due to the COVID-19, my doctoral course was extended. I am very honored to be awarded this scholarship, which has provided me with great support.

I am a doctoral candidate in the Agricultural Department of Tokyo University, and my research topic is Fertilization controls tiller numbers via transcriptional regulation of a MAX1-like gene in rice. Rice is one of the three major food crops in the world. The crop yield has always been the focus of breeders. However, the overuse of chemical fertilizers has led to aquatic and terrestrial pollution, including water eutrophication and soil consolidation. My research is to lay a foundation for breeding of rice cultivars adjusted to low fertilizer cultivation conditions.

After graduation, I intend to return to China and continue to do research in environment-friendly rice breeding. China has the largest population in the world, and the rice cultivation area is very large. If I cultivate and promote rice varieties with low fertilizer demand and high yield in the future, it will play an important role in maintaining food security and creating a good ecological environment.

It is my honor to be able to receive the University of Tokyo Foundation Scholarship, which really supported my study in such difficult time in my life. I am extremely grateful to the foundation and the contributors.

When I was an undergraduate student, I fortunately had participated in a project on aqueduct inspection. This project sparked my interest in non-destructive inspection. It gives me a great sense of accomplishment that my research can protect people’s ordinary and happy daily lives from accident. Therefore, I choose non-destructive inspection as my research topic in graduate.

The research topic of my doctoral thesis is detection of damage in sandwich structures based on laser-ultrasonic waves. As a kind of composite material, sandwich structures have been widely used in aerospace, marine and automotive industries due to their superior properties. For example, the wings and flaps in aircrafts are made of honeycomb sandwich structures. However, repeated loading, aging and impact on such structures in service may cause failures. These damages will reduce the strength of structure significantly then seriously jeopardize the safety. In order to ensure the safety of people’s lives, it is necessary to detect damages with non-destructive method in time to prevent accidents.

In the future, I will keep on doing my research with the hope that it will enable people to use various facilities in their lives with reassure. Once again, thanks a lot for the scholarship supporting my dream.

Thank you, UTokyo!

I am grateful to the UTokyo foundation and the contributors for the support I gained from the foundation, as COVID-19 caused a severe problem to my family. The scholarship helped me with my daily expenses and relieved me from my anxiety.

My research is about neuroscience. Neurons are the basic fundamental units of nervous system. They are highly polarized cells, which are divided into three main compartments: cell body, dendrite, and axon. During the development of nervous system, axon growth is one of the most critical steps for the formation of the precise brain circuit. Ca2+ signaling functions as an important intrinsic mediator to promote axon outgrowth. In mammalian cells, ER-mitochondria contact sites (ERMCS) have been implied to play important roles in several biological processes such as lipid transport, Ca2+ homeostasis and autophagosome formation. It is reported that ERMCS show compartment-specific morphology in dendrites and axons. However, there is no direct evidence for the functional difference between ERMCS in dendrites and axons. PDZD8 is an ER protein localized at ER-mitochondria contact sites and found to be a critical ER-mitochondria tethering protein in the cell. I would like to knock out PDZD8 in the axon part to see PDZD8 and ERMCS’s function in the axon. This research would provide better understanding of the intracellular mechanism when the neuron responds to guidance cue while growing in vivo, which might help us understand the cause of different neurodegenerative diseases.

Sincere appreciation for your generous support and providing the scholarship. It is a great honor for me to receive the UTokyo Foundation Scholarship, which will help me a lot.

The UTokyo has been my dream school for a long time. I successfully completed my master course at Utokyo and am continuing my doctoral program here. And there is no doubt that doing my doctoral program here will equip me with a thrilling, rewarding, and unforgettable learning experience in a field I am passionate about. My research aimed to use the split luciferase complementation technology to detect cellular events in deep tissues. When this technology is successfully developed, it can enable, for example, the detection of protein-protein interactions in deep tissues, specific drug screening in animals, etc. It is predicted that this technology will benefit from spurring unprecedented scientific, medical, and industrial applications.

After completing the doctoral program, my plan for a career is to become a researcher. I wanted to be a researcher who was always passionate about research and with the mindset of constantly creating ideas to benefit the greater good. I believe this is the beginning of my ideal pathway as a researcher. This way, the scholarship also helps me get the edge when seeking my dream after graduation.

Three years ago, I traveled alone in Japan for the special exhibition of Shosoin. After visiting about a dozen famous temples and shrines in Tokyo, Kyoto and Nara, I was fascinated by Japanese culture, was full of longing for living and studying such a beautiful country, where metropolitan life as well as well-preserved history relics and splendid culture are well combined and balances. Coincidentally, it is my honor to become a Ph.D. candidate in neurosciences at the University of Tokyo, and to be supported by the Foreign Student Support Fund, so that I can concentrate on my research related to mice hippocampus memory.

I am longing to see that in the near future is that my research work can promote people's understanding of how memory is generated and consolidated, and can make modest contributions to decoding the mechanism underlies memory related diseases. All this depends on the platform built by the school and society, which enables entry-level researchers to pursue the truth while ensuring a more dignified life. For this, we are always grateful for the support from all aspects.

My childhood was spent primarily playing in the fields because I was raised in a rural area of China close to the east sea. There, I developed a strong fascination and curiosity for plants and started considering how to keep humans and nature in a harmonious connection. During my undergraduate and graduate studies, I learned about plant science and several cutting-edge biological methods, such as mass spectrometry, protein expression, and genetic engineering.

To complete my doctoral studies, I move to Japan because, on the one hand, the country has excellent and high-caliber scientific research teams. On the other hand, I did so to increase my international competitiveness and develop into a professional botanist. My transition into our laboratory went smoothly, and with the assistance of group members, I started conducting my research.

My current research focuses on deciphering the molecular mechanisms of the heme metabolism system and its physiological implications in plant cells. I intend to keep working on worthwhile and challenging botanical projects in the near future to advance the peaceful coexistence of individuals and the environment as well as to achieve sustainable social development.

It is very generous and meaningful for your foundation to provide scholarships for international students, and I appreciate this incredible opportunity very much. As this scholarship do provide a great help to my life and research here. Thank you so much for giving me the precious chance.

Japan’s coastal communities are privileged to access some of the richest and most ecologically diverse waters in the Pacific. However, the region still faces many challenges in the forms of overfishing and environmental threats which all teach us not to take these marine resources for granted. My hope through my doctorate studies at the University of Tokyo is to utilize disciplined and science-based field research to target the needs of specific local communities and bolster sustainable fishery growth. Currently, I am interested in the swordfish fisheries of northern Japan and researching ways for high-value catch methods to be better optimized in ways that make them not only cleaner and more sustainable, but also benefit local fishermen as well as consumers.

Lastly, I feel greatly indebted to Mr. Koga Shinsuke, whose generosity and scholarship it is that helps enable this great opportunity. I am incredibly grateful for the support I receive and look forward to a productive future.

Around the world, fertility rates are dropping, and in some countries, including Japan, this has already led to a declining birthrate. Concerns about climate change and resource allocation make it tempting to see these drops as a universally good thing. Indeed, a smaller global population may have some benefits; perhaps we will see a decline in population until we reach an equilibrium that achieves a more balanced growth for humanity. One that is more sustainable: a shift away from the explosive changes of the past 150 years.

It is also possible, however, that this is an overly negative view on humanity. That for optimal growth we must trust our ingenuity to overcome such obstacles. I cannot tell you yet where the balance lies: how we optimize the relationship between the growth of our economies and our populations, but that is what I strive to discover. What is important is that the future of humanity is not built on self-doubt, or fear, but crafted with the aim of self-improvement, and guided by knowledge, which I hope to do my part in advancing through my studies.

No man is an island, and I owe a heavy debt to many people who have, and continue to, help and support me. My family, my friends, my professors, my fellow students, and those who came before me. To Koga Shinsuke. I am deeply grateful for having been trusted as a recipient of this scholarship, and I will do everything in my power not to let those around me down.

On Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill in Sapporo stands proud the statue of a great man commanding “Boys, be ambitious!”. Both mankind and I have perhaps grown too old to still be considered “boys”, but as long as there is more to learn, and more for us to understand, I hope we keep that spirit inside of us.

I am extremely grateful to the UTokyo foundation and the contributors, and it really offers timely support to me, especially the terrible COVID-19 is still raging around the globe.
It is a great honor for me to enroll in the UTokyo which is a world-class university. Although I have faced serious challenges and difficulties so far, the study life in the UTokyo trains my mind to think actively and positively, and I was becoming a student who could think independently. Moreover, I have learned a lot from my supervisor and other lab members, as well as experienced the culture that I have never seen before. I believe the time span that I spend in the UTokyo is a truly memorable and enjoyable experience in my life.
The research topic of my doctoral thesis is the experimental investigation on plasma physics of nuclear fusion in a tokamak device using high power laser diagnostics. Fusion, the nuclear reaction that energizes the Sun and the stars, is an ultimate goal for mankind because it is a safe, non-carbon emitting and virtually limitless energy. The electron temperature and density profile in the fusion plasma could be acquired using the laser diagnostics, and it is helpful in understanding the physics of controlled nuclear fusion. If mankind is able to understand the physics in the controlled nuclear fusion completely, it will benefit human life in the future.
I plan to continue to delve into the physics of controlled nuclear fusion after graduation, because that is a surely exciting prospect if mankind is able to master this kind of limitless energy. I will put my greatest effort into the development of controlled nuclear fusion, just like the way that the UTokyo has been contributing to the world.

Studying at UTokyo is challenging yet rewarding. Sometimes it really takes time for me to fully digest the ideas delivered in class by the world-class professors, but finally all the efforts pay off by leaving me a much better understanding of the basics of economics and the mathematics involved in doing economic research.

My current research interest lies primarily in the effects of asset price bubbles on the real economy and the implication of asset bubbles on monetary policy in the era of the “zero lower bound”. From my experience in studying at UTokyo I realize that to do theoretical research is not easy. It requires one to observe the sticking point of the economy, to summarize it by a mathematical model, and then to find the logics of the real world by the numbers and equations. My dream of being an economic researcher drives me every day to improve myself, and the resources and opportunities provided by UTokyo makes me confident of my future, to make real contribution to the world.

I’m a 1st year PhD student in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. I’m very happy for getting the scholarship from the University of Tokyo Foundation. Thanks very much for the concerns and supports from the foundation.

My undergraduate majored in engineering and after graduation, I worked in a big hardware company to design smartphones. After 4 years, I felt bored of the repeating jobs. Thus, I took the examination and was admitted to the University of Tokyo for master courses. I conducted researches on urban computing based on big GPS data and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. Although AI is powerful and intriguing, it is still limited on intelligence compared with human brain. Therefore, I turned my PhD into neuroscience and try to explore the biological intelligence in the brain, which I think is pretty interesting.

In addition to the advancement on AI from the research of neuroscience, the exploration of brain can facilitate the development of therapies on brain diseases, for example, Alzheimer’s diseases, depression, from which Lots of people around the world suffered. Therefore, I’ll conduct research on the specific brain regions and dig out the latent mechanisms to make some contributions to the future world.

Many thanks for your kind support and providing the scholarship especially under the world unrest because of COVID-19 pandemic. It is my great honor to be selected as the recipient and helpful for my living.
My major is chemistry, and the research is focused on the interaction between the small molecules and metal clusters, which can be applied to explore catalysts to solve the environment problems such as the global warming. For example, now I am conducting experiment to figure out the interaction between water molecules and Calcium Manganese oxide cluster, which is known as the core for photosynthesis. The result can be useful for the development of artificial photosynthesis catalysts.
Studying in UTokyo is one of the best experiences in my life and I really appreciate it. Thank you so much for supporting me to pursue the dream and it is really exciting for me to embrace the life in Japan.

Thank you, UTokyo!

I am grateful for the support I received from the University of Tokyo foundation. It allows me to continue my research in UTokyo and complete a doctoral degree.
I joined the University of Tokyo in 2016 as a master student in the department of physics. My research was about the experimental physics of gravitational waves. I worked for KAGRA, which is a gravitational wave detector located in Gifu prefecture. During the master course, I was trained with various experimental skills in KEK (Tsukuba, Ibaraki) and KAGRA (Kamioka, Gifu). In 2018, I completed the master program and enrolled in a doctoral program.
During the doctoral program, I decided to study the theoretical physics of gravitational waves in order to understand the gravitational wave physics more comprehensively. I had a great time in ICRR (Kashiwa, Chiba), working with my supervisor and colleges. My research is about using neural network to perform data analysis of gravitational wave signals. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic brought a huge impact on my life. Thanks to the support from UTokyo foundation, I am able to keep pursuing doctoral degree, and I hope I could contribute to the UTokyo community after my graduation.

It is an honor to have received the UTokyo Foundation Scholarship in 2021. This support from UTokyo helps me go through the difficult times under the critical condition of COVID-19 so that I could focus on my research work in the last year of my PhD program.
As a graduate student of astronomy, I study the objects in the universe far away from our planet. In particular, my research tries to answer the question of how planets form in a theoretical approach. It is human instinct to seek the origin, to find out who we are, and where we are from. Understanding the formation mechanism of planets, the cradle of life, is one step towards this ultimate goal. Meanwhile, with the thriving techniques of observations, we are discovering more and more new worlds in the far galaxies. Our future lies in the universe. The final frontier is the infinite space beyond us.
Despite of the aloofness of the objects of my research, such theoretical studies cannot thrive without certain financial support. The UTokyo Foundation Scholarship has helped students like me to dedicate themselves to their pursuit of science. I will keep working hard in my future endeavors and hope that I will make my contribution to the community one day.

It is a great honor to be a recipient of the University of Tokyo Foundation Scholarship, which has helped me to continue the study in Japan during such a difficult time. With the scholarship, I can be more devoted to my research.
Being a student majoring in Chemical System Engineering, I have been interested in combining theory with practice, aiming to contribute to improve the world by scientific research. My research topic is mainly about to employ zeolites to reduce the NOx by selective catalytic reduction with NH3, which is one of the main causes of acid rain, destruction of the ozone layer and respiratory irritation. Due to the coming fierce environmental issues, more attention has been paid into zeolite catalysts, which exhibit outstanding performance with their unique porous structure. In our group, we have developed a post-treatment to enhance its hydrothermal stability, thus making the zeolite a more potential deNOx catalyst for practical application.
It is really interesting and instructive to experience the research life in the University of Tokyo. I feel incredibly grateful to my supervisor and all the staff and students in our laboratory for their kindness and support. Among all I have learnt from this valuable experience, the most precious thing is the ability to solve problems. The life is always challenging, so we need to stay calm and believe we can always find the solution with bright ideas and hard work. I hope I can become a better person and pay back to the society in the future.

Choosing UTokyo is really one of the most significant points in my life. In UTokyo, you can dream big, aim high and achieve a lot. Looking back to the first days in Japan, I could hardly accustom myself to the local life and daily routine, let alone focusing on the study I’m working on. It was actually the considerate help and sincere care which the teachers, staffs and students in UTokyo gave to me that helped me to fit into the new surroundings. Nothing can express my sincere thanks to the great efforts and opportunities that UTokyo Foundation has offered.
Currently, my research is about the novel drug design of platinum-based antineoplastic with increased cancer cell selectivity to overcome drug resistance by altering the chromatin accessibility. Once my research successfully enhances the anticancer effects of platinum drugs, hopefully it will bring about clinical benefits to patients and improvements in their quality of life. Thanks to the help from UTokyo Foundation, now I’m able to take a huge leap in academic performance and concentrate more on my research.

Through carrying out my doctoral studies at The University of Tokyo, my perception of the world's academic and social environment widened markedly. This international research experience has enriched my personal and professional skills. I believe that, as an engineer with the opportunity to develop a doctoral degree in a high-quality nation, I have the responsibility to do my best to carry out an excellent learning process and contribute to the sustainable development of society through my doctoral project. Specifically, my research is oriented to the economic and environmental sustainability of the agricultural and food systems through mechanism design as a field of game theory. It is called the “Circular Food Economy”.
To achieve that goal, I saved as much money as I could in the past years to be able to complete my doctoral course in Japan, but my living expenses are tight. In my country, the COVID-19 outbreak has caused big disparities in socioeconomic conditions and my family is also facing economic difficulties. Then, I am very grateful to the UTokyo Foundation and all the donators for giving me the honor to be a recipient of this scholarship, which has notoriously helped me to cover my own living expenses without burdening my family.
Also, I believe that thanks to the support of this scholarship, I have focused my mind on doing my best to contribute to society without financial concerns, while exchanging knowledge and wonderful experiences with Japanese and foreign people at the university which I most admire. I am also thankful to my supervisor, lab mates, and staff members who have supported me in several ways, making my university life very nice although the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

I am honored to be one of the students to receive the “University of Tokyo international student scholarship”. I have being in Japan fort some years and one of the biggest challenges is the financial one. Finding a scholarship as a South American here is Japan was not easy but one of the good points of studying in Japans is that finding a part-time to cover the expenses is not that hard. The only down side is research time lost, but people so what they have to so they can achieve their dreams. Coming to Japan required an initial investment but after arriving here it is possible to sustain yourself without help from abroad. I hope that not having a scholarship does not avert people from coming here. I came here after saving some in my country and I believe that all my investment will pay off.
My studies at are on the proteins that help the formation of mollusk shells. The mollusk shells is one of interesting natural structures, their nano-structure are well organized and lead to a complex and resistant macro-structure. I believe that studying how natural structures are made we could improve artificial ones. Most biological reactions are less damaging to the environment than chemical ones. I believe that learning how nature can form such structures in a mild environment would benefit us in the future.

I am very honored to be a recipient of the University of Tokyo Foundation Scholarship, which relieves my financial pressure, especially at such a COVID-19 pandemic time. As a student working in the natural product area, spending plenty of time on the experiment leaves me less chance for a part-time job, fortunately, I can concentrate on my research project thanks to the support from this scholarship.
The secondary enzymes that existed in bacteria, fungi, and plants can catalyze various chemical reactions in nature. It strongly interests me that the metabolic pathway can be artificially reconstructed and heterologously expressed, to produce our desired fuels, pharmaceuticals (e.g., artemisinin), and materials of cosmetics, dyes, etc. Taking the advantage of the enzymatic reaction, products will be produced in an environment-friendly manner. Furthermore, the potential of a single enzyme in the pathway can be exploited either by random evolution or rational engineering, to alter the substrate selectivity, achieve an innovative reaction, or have a higher catalysis efficiency. Following these two routes above, the biosynthetic pathway can be rationally designed and optimized to produce our desired compounds. In the field of synthetic biology, humans will find a balance between social development and environmental protection.
I would like to express my sincere thankfulness to the University of Tokyo, which provides me with an excellent environment with opportunities, challenges, and support through the beginning stage of my academic research. I believe in the near future, the development of synthetic biology will imperceptibly change the social appearance and lead us to an unprecedented future.

It is really a great honor to be a recipient of this scholarship, which helps me with my academic journey by providing generous financial support during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Studying at UTokyo is one of the best experiences in my life, although Covid-19 pandemic made campus life more complicated and inconvenient. But online course also saved me more time and energy to dive into the world of DeFi, namely Decentralized Finance, as an extension of my research in financial innovation field. DeFi applications in blockchain and cryptocurrency field from year 2020 overturned many of my previous cognition.
I am grateful that the academic experience at UTokyo enlightened me to explore in emerging fields like FinTech. Although DeFi is too cutting-edge to most of the scholars or professionals who focus their eyes in traditional finance sectors, I am looking forward to embracing a more decentralized financial world in the future. DeFi will redefine Finance.

2020 was a remarkably difficult year, pandemic, wildfires, crash … We witnessed many bad things, but we have to go on. And it's my great honor to receive the scholarship in 2020. It helps me to decrease my life stress under this difficult period.
I came to U-Tokyo in 2018 and received my master’s degrees last year. Now, I am a PhD student and keep chasing my academic dreams. My research topic is about computer vision, or we can call it AI. I wish we can make computer/robot complete some difficult/dangerous tasks like human beings. For example, under the current severe epidemic period, there are many kinds of dangerous tasks need relative staffs to complete. If computer/robot can help us finish these tasks, I think it’s a great thing.
To realize these targets, I will try my best to do research in the feature even under a difficult period. And I know, U-Tokyo will keep supporting us in our struggle.

My research focuses on Blue Carbon, which is the carbon dioxide sequestrated from the atmosphere by mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrasses. Plant biomass growth and organic matter accumulation and stabilization in the sediments are the main carbon sequestration routines. I use photogrammetry to develop a more accurate estimate method for seagrass blue carbon in the intertidal zone and the seagrass blue carbon accumulated on the coast. This methodology will be made available to local fishing associations and NPOs to quickly assess the carbon sinks of blue carbon in their coastal regions. Besides, as a case study in Tokyo Bay, the work based on the developing method will complement the blue carbon budget details in coastal seagrass ecosystems and support the estimation of potential carbon sinks on the coastal areas.
During the past two years at the University of Tokyo, I have received much help from my classmates and friends here, and I am incredibly grateful to my supervisor for his patience and careful guidance, who taught me step by step how to do research. I hope in turn one day, I can also help someone in the same way and become part of the connection between China and Japan.

In 2020, COVID-19 brought suffering to people all of the world. The scholarship supported by UTokyo Foundation really helps me a lot in such a tough time. This is the fourth year that I have been studying in the UTokyo where I have broadened my horizon and fostered a global mind. How time flies. I can still remind of the day that I received the admission latter from the Utokyo as a master student. It is my great honor to study in the world-class university to search for the interrelationships among various academic fields and to find promising solutions to the improvement of global healthcare, facing challenges of the upcoming super-aging society.
After graduation, I plan to continue my research in the field of Internet of medical things (IoMT), especially on biodevices with the employment of deep learning, as a postdoctoral researcher. I decide to focus on the development of IoMT which is promising to bring a chance to transfer traditional hospital-centric healthcare to a home-centric one, offering a possible solution to the lack of basic medical resources in the remote places. My dream is to enlighten more students to raise interests in biosensors and study for making our world a better place as a university professor. What I can contribute to this field individually is limited, therefore, I would like to pass down what I have learned to the next generation and evoke their social sense to pay more attention to the global issues, like the super-aging society.

I feel extremely grateful for receiving this scholarship during this period when the whole world is affected by corona virus. It has great impact on my financial wellbeing and made me more determined to stay in Japan and contribute the Japanese society after graduation.
Now I’m studying in the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Science in Tokyo University. My main research is about Parkinsonism. Parkinson’s Disease affects more than ten million people worldwide, incidence of PD increases with age. While in Japan, the prevalence of PD is close to 1/1000. The cause of this disease is thought to be the pathological change in a protein called synuclein, which easily aggregates and form insoluble fibril. Lots of research consider these fibrils as the cause of neurons death, which lead to brain malfunction and eventually death. There are three subtypes of PD and researchers proposed that different synuclein protein structures could cause different kind of PD diseases. Thus, my main project is to observe the propagation of different synuclein fibrils in the brain and find out in what way they can cause different diseases.
I’m really interested in dementia related diseases and plan to participate in such field even after my graduation from Tokyo University. Hopefully I can contribute to the society through working in this field.

The COVID-19 pandemic has robustly affected my life. I lost most of my part-time jobs and was having an extremely hard life. Therefore, the 2020 Fall scholarship provided by the UTokyo Foundation has not only been an immense financial support for me, but it has also offered me the ease of mind to pursue my studies to the best of my abilities. A BIG THANK YOU for your generous support and help!

During my undergraduate years, I was mainly doing research in biology, especially focusing on the evolutionary history of a novel bacterium. However, I also hope to get involved in implementing and enforcing environmental policies to help both local and global communities and this is why I chose Todai’s IPADS program. My future research topic might be utilizing agricultural wastes to reduce marine plastics. The thing is that both agricultural wastes and marine plastics pose serious threats to the environment. If novel methods or technologies could be developed to recycle agricultural wastes for the production of environmentally friendly products, definitely a more sustainable marine environment would be possible.

I think marine plastic pollution is such a global issue exerting adverse impacts on human health and our planet, so I would like to the person who can contribute to building a more environmentally sustainable global society.

I’m greatly honored to receive this scholarship. As in the post-coronavirus era, this scholarship significantly eases my financial burden and make me to enjoy the study and life in UTokyo.

I’m a doctoral student and majored in condensed matter physics. My study meanly focuses on low-dimensional interaction systems, or more specifically, on the interaction systems with two-dimensional network structures. Such network systems are novel models and tightly related with unconventional superconductors. I hope I can understand the principle of high-Tc superconductors and related novel phenomena by studying the interaction network systems, and eventually helps people to produce practical room temperature superconductors.

The University of Tokyo is an ideal research platform with various of high-level researchers, including my current supervisor. They provide me a lot of helps about living in Japan and researching on my physics problems. Finally, I sincerely appreciate and enjoy the study and life in UTokyo.

It was a great pleasure for me to have received this scholarship from the University of Tokyo. Through the financial support, I could devote more time for my studies and research.
I am towards the completion of my Doctoral thesis from the Human Security Program of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. I look forward to the next chapter of my life. My dream is to be an educator. Having had a chance to receive my higher education in Japan, I believe that I have been bestowed with a lot of new skills and knowledge that I would otherwise have been deprived of back in my home country. I hope to establish my own educational institution and provide a learning opportunity for many underprivileged students in the future. I have realized that while creating an enabling academic environment is a must, designing economic support mechanisms for the needy is equally important to help them realize their true potentials. To this end, cherishing the learnings I have had at this university, I would like to pay forward what I was rewarded for to the people of the next generation.

I am really grateful for the opportunity of receiving the “University of Tokyo international student scholarship”, that it helps me get through the difficult times during my research.
My research focuses on understanding the smallholder farmers’ decision-making of the sustainable soil management (SSM) practice in China. The SSM is promoted as an important integral component of the Sustainable Development Goals of food security (SDG-2) and climate resilience and mitigation (SDG-13). In the highest soil erosion regions of arid and semiarid northwest China, water resource deficits and farmland misuse have further exacerbated soil degradation. Therefore, understanding how farmers in diverse agro climatic zones perceive and respond to different SSM practices is important to the sustainable agricultural development in developing countries.
The University of Tokyo is such a great school that provides us with many opportunities including diverse courses, academic seminars and discussion forums. Also, I am really appreciate help from my supervisor and friends in here. My experiences in school not only broaden our vision, but also change my way of thinking. Changing our thinking pattern and minds is hard, but it’s important within growing divisions of the academic disciplines and society.

It’s a great honor for me to receive this scholarship which significantly lighten my financial burden. Thanks for this scholarship sincerely.

I’m a master student majors in physics and my research area is data analysis. Generally speaking, what I do is to use deep learning and machine learning to improve the sensitivity in neutrino mass hierarchy analysis.

As is known to all, the mass of neutrino is one thing that goes beyond standard model of particle physics which will reveal a more fantastic law than standard model. While we can not tell whether it is normal hierarchy or invert hierarchy because of the limitation of data volumes and sensitivity of analysis. I desire to make some progress in this area and extend human’s knowledge horizon in awesome subject which contain both macro and micro secretes.

Last but not least, Tokyo is a brilliant place with excellent people and dazzling landscape. Also, I’ve got a lot of help from my supervisor, lecture, classmates and friends in Tokyo.
